Vanessa Banigo Be Your Own #WCW | Seize your “New Day”

I hate to tell you ladies that if you are going to be your own woman crush, you’re going to have to do more than workout and eat well, you’re going to have to be your own defender, pioneer, and pin-up girl. You’ll need courage, self-belief and a Teflon attitude because as a woman spreads her wings, there are many people waiting to clip them.

This is a time globally where many women are standing up for sexual harassment and discrimination. Read Ireti Bakare’s excellent BellaNaija article saying it’s time for Nigerian women to stand here.

Unfortunately, discrimination can even occur during a simple workout as I recently found when trying out Fitness Central gym in Lekki, Lagos. In the words of Lasisi Elenu “Sometin jus happen right now!” I was enjoying working out there when Patience, a trainer, interrupted me to say my gym attire was too revealing (see pic below).

I was told that WOMEN were not to wear gym wear showing their tummy/chest as “We don’t want any distractions or complaint from female members that the guys were harassing them.” Distractions for who? MEN of course Patience admitted. So, instead of warning men not to harass women, the gym warns women not to distract men, continuing the myth that men can be provoked into harassment, assault and rape by what the victim does or does not do. Puhleeze!

Lupita Nyong’o is a Subtle Delight for The Hollywood Reporter’s Latest Issue

Lupita Nyong’o is the cover star for THR‘s new issue.

The 34-year-old Oscar winner spoke to the magazine about why she chose to speak out about Harvey Weinstein, her Insecurities and also on the importance of the movie Black Panther.

See excerpts below:

On why she spoke up about Weinstein: “I felt uncomfortable in my silence, and I wanted to liberate myself from it and contribute to the discussion. That was just what I felt I needed to do, quite viscerally. I couldn’t sleep. I needed to get it out … I had to talk to [my mother] about it because it was something that we hadn’t talked about. She was really moved and very supportive.”

The African Stars that Stole the Spotlight at SAG Awards 2018

Award season is in full swing, and all eyes turned to the red carpet once again last night for the Screen Actor’s Guild Award celebrations. This year, haute couture made an appearance while a new sense of sophistication prevailed.

Our eyes were focused on our award-winning African celebrities who earned their way to the top with their incredible talent and won our hearts with effortless style.

Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya and Lola Ogunnaike

Keep scrolling to see what your favourite Africans stars wore to the .

Uzo Aduba

Uzo oozed perfect old Hollywood glamour from her full wavy hair to the ethereal Christian Siriano one-shoulder gown with Chopard jewellery in between, coming together to make a pretty, purposefully royal outfit.

Lupita Nyong’o

Sure, the Kirakira+ worthy embellishments and extra sheer lace details on her Ralph & Russo dress were grand, but Lupita’s slender curves totally brought out the best in the dress.

Daniel Kaluuya

The Ugandan Get Out star who was nominated for two awards at the show wore a slim fit tuxedo with silk trims paired with a V-neck t-shirt and loafers.

Lola Ogunnaike

The Host of “Entertainment Weekly The Show” was in studio 54 fashion in a patterned sequin floor-length cami dress with a classic leg slit. The dress was a complimentary number for the red carpet silhouette in a two-toned purple and blue take.

Meet The Sivada Sisters Making A Case For Curvy Fashion in South Africa

Like all journeys, the road to becoming a successful fashion designer begins with a will. According to the Sivada sisters, Bianca and Kamara:

Even though we did not study fashion design we have always had a nichè for beautiful things. Designing and creating have always been a part of our nature.

Although they learned designing through trial and error , their brand VADA now has a huge following and well-deserved recognition. In the face of body shaming and conforming practices in the fashion industry, the South African duo run one of the biggest ready-to-wear brands in the country.

They admit to have struggled with finding stylish clothes that actually fit their body shapes so they decided to create their own fashion brand with pieces that celebrate the curvy fashionistas.

Of course the journey has been far from smooth; From magazine rejections, cash flow issues to people not believing in what we could accomplish. There are days when we want to give up but remaining faithful, humble and strong is key to success.

The sisters are focused on their plan to cater to every female size one day.

For this week’s , we corresponded with Bianca and Kamara to pick their brains and learn more about the beauties behind the brand.

How To Look Chic in Neutrals, According To Stephanie Coker-Aderinokun

Stephanie Coker-Aderinokun is no stranger to street style and red carpet , she switches between both realms effortlessly and with a practiced ease that only true fashionistas understand . The style maven, beauty entrepreneur  and TV host is a pro at making the most simple outfits look extremely polished and she shows her faultless style yet again in this neutral ensemble from emerging designer . We love the texture of the macram-esque lace set and how it complements her gorgeous crochet curls from her company .

With such unique texture, we were happy to see she kept the focus on the head-turning piece. Pairing it with barely-there see-through lucite heeled mules, stud earrings, her engagement ring and reflective sunnies. Her barely-there makeup completed the look nicely.
